Funding provider: Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic
Project title: Protection of the population and responding units of the Integrated Rescue System of the Czech Republic against emissions from lithium battery fires
Project registration number: VB02000068
Programme: VB – Security Research Programme of the Czech Republic 2021–2026: Development, Testing and Evaluation of New Security Technologies (SECTECH)
Grant amount: CZK 14,360,282, representing 69.59% of the maximum eligible costs
Project duration: 01/2024–12/2026

Project description

The main objectives of the project include the identification of substances present in gaseous and liquid emissions and the subsequent development of outputs usable by emergency response units during fires involving Li-ion batteries (electromobility, battery take-back facilities, or recycling centers). Further objectives include the identification of suitable technologies for the treatment of firefighting water, minimization of risks associated with the recycling of Li-ion batteries (safe storage, regeneration of wastewater generated during Li-ion battery recycling), and the development of a portable, personal, battery-powered detector of acidic gases such as HCl and HF for mobile field use.

Project results

  • Z – Regeneration of electrolyte solution in the discharge bath
  • Z – Efficient treatment of water generated during firefighting of Li-ion battery fires
  • G – Portable acidic gas detector
