The goal of this contract, financed by the Czech Development Agency, was to conduct a site investigation of the former refinery in Batumi, Georgia, contaminated with petroleum substances, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals.
The site investigation included sampling of groundwater, surface water, sediments, soils, construction materials, and waste. The survey results were evaluated in a risk study, which led to the proposal of remedial measures and target limits for remediation. The project culminated in the preparation of design documentation for remediation measures, including the bioremediation of 921,000 tons of contaminated soil and the removal of 37,000 tons of petroleum sludge and hazardous waste.
The remediation design documentation will be used by local authorities to secure appropriate funding and select a contractor for the remediation of the entire former refinery site in Batumi.
