Rooftop constructed wetland for wastewater treatment in Bašť

The project was developed based on a design by the consortium BARAAK architekti, Dvořák & Partners, and Banality Studio. The investor is the Union of Municipalities Pod Beckovem. We participated in both the design and implementation of the treatment plant with a capacity of 205 PE (population equivalent). The constructed wetland occupies one-third of the roof of a two-story building, while the remaining area is covered by an extensive green roof. Wastewater from the school is treated separately from rainwater and kitchen water, with part of the rainwater used to replenish the treatment system during school holidays.
The technological solution includes an anaerobic separator, pumping stations, and three constructed wetland filters with a total area of 640 m². The filtering layers made of lightweight aggregate ensure effective treatment while minimizing the load on the building structure. Safety overflows protect the roof structure from overloading.
The project in Bašť is an example of efficient on-site water management and also serves as an educational element for students, helping them understand the importance of responsible water use. Without this specific wastewater treatment approach, the construction and operation of the elementary school would not have been permitted.
