More about the project

PFAS are known for their high chemical and thermal stability, which leads to their persistence in the environment. The first utilized substance was perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which was widely used in firefighting foams and other applications. These substances are now banned, but their derivatives are still in use. PFAS are found in drinking water, soil, and living organisms, posing a health risk. In the Czech Republic, a regulation effective from January 2024 sets a limit for PFAS in drinking water.

Removing PFAS from the environment is challenging, but it is possible to remove them from drinking water and concentrated sources of contamination. Various technologies, such as adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, and membrane technologies, can be effective. DEKONTA is testing existing technologies and developing new methods for PFAS removal, including catalytic wet oxidation and supercritical water gasification.
