Long-term reliable production of high-quality drinking water using activated carbon while respecting the principles of the circular economy

Project number: SS07020146
Project duration: 04/2024–06/2026
Project partners: University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague; Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i.; Waterworks Káraný, a.s.

Project description

The objectives of the project are to:

  • verify the actual long-term operational and sorption properties of reactivated granular activated carbon (GAC) under the conditions of the Káraný water treatment plant;
  • evaluate the efficiency of different types of GAC for the separation of various types of micropollutants during drinking water production, including temporal changes and performance after GAC reactivation;
  • propose an appropriate methodology for assessing the influence of GAC reactivation conditions on the actual sorption properties of GAC in drinking water production.

This project is supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic under the Environment for Life Programme and is funded by EU financial resources within the National Recovery Plan (Recovery and Resilience Facility).
